Pompei is a beautiful town on the south side of Vesuvio, near Sarno river.
The town is buildt round the sanctuary erected by Bartolo Longo in 1876 near the old town destroyed
by the eruption of in 79 a.C.
The great attraction of the city are archaeological excavations; thanks to them we can learn
everything about everyday life of old citizens killed by Vesuvio.
The excavations, started by Carlo III di Borbone in 1748, have never been interrupted and this
is the reason why we have so many treasures. But the most part of them is preserved in the
National Archaeological Museum in Neaples.
Besides the excavations, Pompei is also famous for its sanctuary, Santuario della Madonna del
Rosario and its shops. It is a good place to spend a nice day or night.
Moreover, in the big square near the second sanctuary, Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario,
you can find the monument building in memory of Bartolo Longo.
